Downtown Education Program Spectrum's Downtown Education program serves homeless, runaway, and disconnected youth who have either dropped-out of high school, or are having difficulties navigating successfully through secondary education. The goal of this program is to assist disadvantaged youth in completing a high school diploma or GED, and to promote access to post-secondary learning.
Youth are encouraged to use our library and resource center, as well as take advantage of the following services: - Educational advocate at Burlington High School (BHS) for enrolled Spectrum students (runaway and homeless)
- Guidance and support for youth who are struggling to complete high school, including one-on-one and small group tutorials for high school credit
- Tutors for drop-out youth who wish to return to school — student re-enrolls in high school and attends classes, or is tutored for credit at Downtown Education
- GED tutoring support including pre-testing, test prep, and counseling, and study support for individuals and in group settings
- Assistance for students in every aspect of preparation for transition to post-secondary education, including consultation, SAT preparation, and assistance with college applications
In 2006, Spectrum's Downtown Education staff has worked with more than 120 young people ages 15-21 from 10 counties in Vermont.
