Murray Street Coop Spectrum's Youth Cooperative is a group living program for six adolescent males in state custody that provides a community-based transition to independent living.
The Spectrum case-management staff works with a team for each youth to support them in stabilizing their life and building the necessary skills to live independently. This program divides these skills into core youth development areas: career development, health (including physical & mental health/substance abuse), education, life skills, and recreational fun/ free time. In each core area, the resident develops a set of goals with their case-manager that he would like to achieve and maintain.
Each youth is expected to be involved in an education plan and be trying to secure a part-time job or internship. They learn basic skills such as cooking and cleaning, as well as budgeting money and time management. The program provides 24-hour supervision and oversight.
