Youth Involvement: When Push Comes to Shovel

I can't tell you how refreshing it was to witness four of Spectrum's clients digging, pushing, and even laughing with those unfortunate souls whose cars were embedded in knee-deep snow. Throughout the day I witnessed them help out a half dozen vehicles, with little more than a wave or simple thank you as payment. Adam Sancic, Street Outreach Coordinator

Outreach

The goal of this program is to build relationships between street youth and program outreach staff in order to help youth leave the streets. Spectrum's Outreach program is staffed by Peer Outreach Workers (POW!s) and adults, who work together to find the pockets where street youth congregate and sleep, and to bring services to them.

One of the most challenging barriers to reaching these young people is the difficulty in forming trusting relationships. Street youth have been "burnt" too often by adults in their lives, and therefore are very wary of them. Spectrum hires POW!s from the target population to reach out and establish initial contact, credibility, and trust. POW!s have been a very effective tool in attracting homeless, runaway, and disconnected young people to Spectrum's programs.

Teams of trained POW!s and adult staff members offer basic first-aid, counseling, information, and referrals to services for HIV, pregnancy, substance abuse and sexual abuse prevention, and they provide street youth with information and referrals to services. Street Outreach staff serves as the eyes and ears of the agency, and made approximately 525 contacts in 2006.
