<p><em>What follows is a note from our Executive Director, Mark Redmond.</em></p>
<hr />
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Thank you</strong></span> to all who joined us at the Empty Bowl Dinner on October 12th.</p>
<p>I was awestruck by the compassion and caring you showed for our youth. <strong>I am so grateful that our young people can rely on you to offer a hand when the going gets tough.</strong></p>
<p>As René said that night, <em>“Spectrum is about creating that sense of family. It is about creating a sense of community and knowing that we are loved and supported. And that there are youth and staff and, also, wonderful people like you out here who are supporting us every day. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">And I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you are doing</span>.”</em></p>
<p><strong>Thanks to you, we raised $68,400 that night—$15,000 from the giving board alone!</strong> And because of the generosity of all who donated food and services to the event, almost all of the money raised will go directly to helping our youth build their own success.</p>
<p>Thank you for being a part of such a great night.</p>
<p>With gratitude,<br />

<hr />
<p>We all need encouragement to be healthy sometimes! <strong>Our youth are staying active with the new Wellness Wall in our </strong><a href="http://www.spectrumvt.org/what-we-do/drop-in-center/"><strong>Drop-In Center</strong></a><strong>.</strong> The wall encourages youth to engage in positive, healthy activities with our staff.</p>
<p><strong>So, how does it work?</strong> From A to Z, there’s dozens of activity suggestions on the wall. For each activity a youth completes, they’ll earn one wellness point. The points add up, and youth can earn gift certificates for coffee or tea, movies, music performances, or other enrichment activities.</p>
<p>“One of our youth really wants to take a belly-dancing class. So when they have built up 30 points, they can take a dance class,” said <a href="http://www.spectrumvt.org/what-we-do/drop-in-center/">Drop-In</a> Coordinator Allie Forward.</p>
<p>It can be a simple activity. Like <a href="http://www.spectrumvt.org/whats-in-a-food-budget/">eating a whole serving of vegetables at dinner</a> with our staff. <strong>Or maybe it’s something that’s much harder when you don’t have a support network.</strong> Like working with our staff to make a dentist appointment and go to the dentist.</p>
<p><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-2238" src="/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893-1024x683.jpg" alt="IMG_1893" width="1024" height="683" srcset="/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893-1024x683.jpg 1024w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893-300x200.jpg 300w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893-768x512.jpg 768w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893-450x300.jpg 450w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893-600x400.jpg 600w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1893-97x65.jpg 97w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></p>
<p>The Wellness Wall encourages our youth to use healthy coping skills and do more active, wholesome things throughout the day. They can keep track of their points on personal wellness cards that they can decorate themselves. <strong>For youth who don’t have a safe space to go each night,</strong> we can store their wellness cards in the <a href="http://www.spectrumvt.org/what-we-do/drop-in-center/">Drop-In Center</a> so they can still earn points.</p>
<p><strong>Not every wellness activity is based on physical fitness.</strong> The letter “T” for example, is “Talk it out! Work things out the cool way, with words!” This encourages our clients to use nonviolent communication to resolve a conflict and talk with a staff member about how it was helpful.</p>
<p>As one client put it, <strong>&#8220;Health is new to me because I&#8217;ve spent most of my life being bitter and self destructive.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>“There’s lots of room on the wall for youth to add their own ideas of wellness, and we’re open to that, too,” says Allie. “Our clients seem excited to better themselves and it’s a great way to get youth involved in activities that we offer.”</p>
<p><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-2239" src="/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898-1024x683.jpg" alt="IMG_1898" width="1024" height="683" srcset="/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898-1024x683.jpg 1024w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898-300x200.jpg 300w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898-768x512.jpg 768w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898-450x300.jpg 450w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898-600x400.jpg 600w, /wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_1898-98x65.jpg 98w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></p>
