Spectrum’s Mentoring Program matches young people ages 12–22 with caring adult volunteers in Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle counties.

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, counselor, or a young person looking for support, we’re here to help make the connection.

A mentor is a caring adult who shows up consistently. Someone to spend time with, talk to, and try new things with. It’s not therapy or tutoring. It’s a real relationship built on trust and connection.

What to Expect

  • Young people are matched with a mentor based on shared interests
  • Matches meet a few times a month doing things they both enjoy
  • A Spectrum staff member stays involved and is always available
  • Young people’s comfort and safety always come first

Does the mentoring program cost anything for families?

No. Spectrum’s mentoring program is free for youth and families.

Are mentors screened?

Yes. All mentors complete a screening process that includes DMV checks, state registry checks, interviews, reference checks, and a national criminal background check.

What kinds of activities do mentors and mentees do together?

Mentors and young people often spend time together doing simple, low-cost activities like going for walks, attending community events, playing games, getting food, working on art, or simply spending time talking and connecting.

Become a mentor and change a life.

For just a few hours a month, you can build a meaningful relationship with a young person in your community. Spend time together on a bike ride, cooking a meal, going to an event, or trying something new together. Matches are based on shared interests and meet at least twice a month.

You don’t need to be a hero or a trained counselor. You just need to show up. Spectrum mentors spend time with young people through everyday activities and consistent connection.

We have a particular need for male mentors, mentors of color, and LGBTQ+ identified mentors.

  • Spend about 4 hours per month over 2–4 sessions

Common Questions

Do mentors pay for background checks?

No. Spectrum covers the cost of all required screenings and background checks.

What if I need to travel or be away for a few weeks?

That’s okay. We encourage mentors to stay in touch with their mentee while away — even a quick text, phone call, or postcard can help maintain connection and consistency.

How often do mentors and mentees meet?

Mentors and mentees typically meet a few times each month and spend about 4 hours together over 2–4 sessions.
